Dr. Hiroko Kataoka

Hiroko C. Kataoka is Professor of Japanese at California State University, Long Beach (Ph.D. University of Illinois).  Her current research focuses on young learners of Japanese, including heritage speakers of Japanese and Japanese immersion programs. Her most recent book is “Amerika de Sodatsu Nihon no Kodomo tachi: Bairingaru no Hikari to Kage,” co-edited with Gun’ei Sato.  Her recent papers include  “Development of narrative writing ability and language proficiency in young JHL learners in a Japanese Immersion Program” in New perspectives on Japanese language learning, linguisticsand culture, co-authored with Masako Douglas and Kiyomi Chinen  (2013), and “Japanese language proficiency and home language use among children of international marriages: Breaking free from common assumptions” in JHL Journal: Japanese Heritage Language Education, co-authored with Setsue Shibata (2011).  Kataoka has given numerous workshops throughout the US and abroad on OPI, proficiency-oriented instruction, Standards for Foreign Language Learning, AP* Japanese Language and Culture, and many other pedagogy-related issues. She has also served on many national committees and boards, including the Japanese National Standards Task Force (Chair), AP Japanese Task Force, and the boards of directors for ATJ, AATJ, NCJLT, and Aurora Foundation. She has organized numerous grant-supported conferences on Japanese teacher training, immersion programs, and national standards.  She is a recipient of ACTFL's Florence Steiner Award for Leadership.

Dr. Masako Douglas

Masako O. Douglas is Professor of Japanese at California State University, Long Beach. Her research interests include Japanese heritage language development and pedagogy of young and adult learners, and curriculum design with a special focus on Content-Based Instruction. She created a textbook for young Japanese heritage speakers, “Ken Ken Pa” (2010). Her papers include “Development of narrative writing ability and language proficiency in young JHL learners in a Japanese Immersion Program” in New perspectives on Japanese language learning, linguistics, and culture, co-authored with Hiroko Kataoka and Kiyomi Chinen  (2013), “Analysis of kanji ability of heritage learners of Japanese” in JHL Journal (2010)and “Scaffolding in Content Based Instruction of Japanese” in Japanese Language and Literature, co-authored with Hiroko Kataoka (2008). Dr. Douglas earned her B.A. and M.A. from Kobe City University of Foreign Studies in Japan, another M.A. from Australian National University and a Ph.D. from University of Southern California. She is Chair of Japanese Heritage Language SIG of American Association of Teachers of Japanese, and an Editorial Board member of the Heritage Language Journal, UCLA. She is a recipient of American Association of Teachers of Japanese 2012 Teacher Award.
