Keynote Speaker: Dr. Eiko Ushida, School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, UC San Diego

Dr. Eiko Ushida

Dr. Eiko Ushida is a lecturer of Japanese at Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. She teaches intermediate to advanced Japanese courses as well as professional courses including business and politics. She served as a TJSC president in 2008-2010. She has participated in the AP Japanese Reading as a content scoring leader in 2007, and written a number of reviews for Teacher’s Resources in the AP Central and an article on curriculum module for the AP Japanese workshop material. She has been a senior member for the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) online professional development courses called “JOINT” and taught “Content-Based Instruction for Advanced Japanese” and “Basic Concepts of Japanese Language Teaching.” She was also an assistant faculty member for AATJ’s Summer Institute in Urawa, Japan on “Incorporating Culture in the Japanese Language Classroom” in 2010. She has been on the AATJ Board as a Professional Development Director since the beginning of 2013.

Ms. Chie Fujie, Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School

Ms. Chie Fujie

Ms. Chie Fujie, who has a M.A. in Educational Psychology from California State University, Northridge, is currently a full-time teacher at Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School in Glendale. She currently teaches in a self-contained 3rd grade class where she teaches half day in Japanese half day in English.

Ms. Sachiko Iwami

Ms. Sachiko Iwami has been teaching Japanese to 9th-12th graders at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School for the last six years. This year she is teaching three combined classes of third-year level, third-year honors, and fourth-year level. Additionally, she supports the teachers of the Japanese school, functioning as a curriculum advisor, at Orange Coast Gakuen in Huntington Beach.
