Theme:   Language Instruction Based on Students' Backgrounds: Age, Learning Environments, and Motivation

Speakers: Dr. Setsue Shibata, California State University, Fullerton, Dr. Asako Hayashi-Takakura, University of California, Los Angeles

The theme will be “Language Instruction Based on Students’ Backgrounds: Age, Learning Environments, and Motivation.” Dr. Setsue Shibata from California State University Fullerton and Dr. Asako Hayashi-Takakura from University of California Los Angeles will be our keynote speakers. In the morning session, Dr. Shibata will give a presentation that will look at language acquisition from the neuroscience perspective, and Dr. Hayashi-Takakura will discuss how learners’ age, cognitive development, and motivation affect Japanese learning. In the afternoon session, Dr. Hayashi-Takakura will lead a hands-on session where, in small groups, everyone will have a chance to create lesson plans that take students’ needs into consideration.

Dr. Setsue Shibata

Dr. Setsue Shibata is Professor of Japanese at California State University, Fullerton.  In her Ph.D. and publications, Dr. Shibata has specialized in Japanese pedagogy and language acquisition, focusing on learner-centered instruction and Japanese for Academic Purposes. Her publications have appeared in a variety of journals including Journal of CAJLE, Foreign Language Annals, Journal of National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages, Journal of Japanese Heritage Language, CRIE Review of International Education. Her recent publications include “Content-based instruction: Teaching haiku and waka in Advanced Japanese class” (coauthored with Toshiko Yokota, 2013)“Japanese proficiency of the children of international marriage: A comparative study” (coauthored with Hiroko Kataoka, 2011), “Learning Japanese particles among students at supplementary Japanese Schools in the U.S.” (2008), “Motivation factors to learn an Asian language among college students” (coauthored with Dr. Jack Liu, 2008). She is also a coauthor of Japanese textbook “日本語学習者のための日本文学 [Exploring Japanese Literature: A Text for Language Learners at Intermediate Level and Above] (with Toshiko Yokota and Akemi Morioka, 2011). Dr. Shibata received numerous grants and awards, including Faculty Recognition of Scholarly and Creative Activity (2007 and 2010), Recognition of Professional Development (College Board, 2009, 2010), and various internal and external grants for research and programmatic development. She taught language pedagogy and Intercultural communication graduate class at Seijo University as a visiting professor in 2013. 

Dr. Asako Hayashi-Takakura

Dr. Asako Hayashi-Takakura is a lecturer of Japanese at University of California Los Angeles. Her research focuses on language development of Japanese-English bilingual children, curriculum development for Japanese heritage language speakers, and computer assisted language learning (CALL). Her papers include “Content Based Instruction in Immersion Education –A study on the prospect of leaning languages and contents” in proceedings of the 18th Princeton Japanese Pedagogy Forum, (2011),“Developing web-based multi level materials for Japanese Content-Based Instruction” in Japanese Language and Literature, Journal of Association of Teachers of Japanese, co-authors of Akemi Morioka and Eiko Ushida (2008), and  “Japanese English Bilingual Children in Three Different Educational Environments”, Heritage Language Development: Focus on East Asian Immigrants, Kondo-Brown,K. (Ed.).(2006). Dr. Hayashi-Takakura earned BA from Nihon University College of Arts, MA in Special Education from Georgia Southwestern University, another MA in Japanese pedagogy from Columbia University and a doctor of Education (Ed.D) from Boston University. She was selected as a member of the curriculum development of The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center of Department of Defense in 2013.
