TJSC 2024 Spring Workshop

2024年春の研修会は4月14日(日)に開催致します。講演者は、昨年の秋の研修会に引き続き、All Saints’ Episcopal School のマツザキ先生とミシガン大学の望月良浩先生、さらに『楽読』の佐藤明子先生、UCLAの川西由美子先生をお招きして、日頃から日本語教育の現場で活躍する先生方が抱えておられるお悩みや問題点を共有し、また、ご経験、ご意見なども交換できる勉強会を開催いたします。秋の研修会にご参加にならなかった方も大歓迎ですので、皆様、是非ご参加ください。オンライン(Zoom)での開催となり、参加者の皆様には申し込み時に各セッションのご希望のトピックを選んでご参加いただくことになります。それぞれのトピックの講演者と講演内容、また当日のタイムテーブルは以下の通りです。

DEIB (Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging) in Primary/Secondary Education (Dr. William M. Matsuzaki)

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging work and initiatives have changed greatly since 2020. We quickly pivoted to different approaches and mindset, and we often looked for playbooks to help us navigate them. As educators, we are always trying hard to elevate the students’ experiences and consider the diversity of thought and perspectives, while teaching our content and skills. In this interactive, reflective and practical workshop, we will pose ten strategies to include in your practices to foster more welcoming, respectful, and safe learning environment/classrooms. Each person’s journey within DEIB work is different, and it is important to honor each person’s place and time within this continuum. In this workshop, participants will learn strategies to cultivate a welcoming, respectful, and safe learning environment for all students.

DEIB in Higher Education (Prof. Yoshihiro Mochizukii)

Building on the success of the TJSC 2023 Fall Workshop, "Ten Things You Can Do to Make Your Classroom More Inclusive," we invite you to an interactive follow-up session. This dynamic workshop translates Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) theories into actionable strategies, empowering educators with practical tools. Participants will engage in focused small group discussions, exploring the challenges and benefits of implementing DEIB in language education. From embracing diversity to confronting assumptions, participants will gain insights and collaborative problem-solving skills. This workshop equips educators to confidently create inclusive, safe, and caring Japanese language classrooms through guided discussions.

『楽読』〜時間の余裕で心の余裕を!〜 (Ms. Akiko Sato)

この45分間のワークショップは、まず日本の速読法「楽読」と脳の仕組みについての簡単な説明をした後、レッスンのショートバージョンを体験して頂き、最後に質疑応答という3部構成で行います。「楽読」のレッスンは日英両語でやることも受講生さんがどの言語でも本を読むことができます。「楽読」がなぜ生徒達また先生方に有益なものなのかを感じてもらう時間です。皆さんとお会いできることを楽しみにしています!

CANVASで使うオノマトペ教材と文脈を活用した学習法 (Dr. Yumiko Kawanishi)

このセッションでは日本語教育におけるオノマトペ学習の重要性に焦点を当て、UCLA Center for the Advancement Teachingの支援で開発されたオノマトペの学習教材(CANVAS (LMS)で使用可能)を説明し、デモを行います。オノマトペ学習は文字認識の初級段階から可能であり、文学作品のオノマトペ表現や関連表現の理解を促進します。本教材にはGIFフラッシュカード、音声ファイル、クイズも提供されています。また、同GIFを活用しプロフィシェンシーを高める方法についても触れます。 


Biography of the Presenters 

Dr. William M. Matsuzaki, Prof. Yoshihiro Mochizuki,

Ms. Akiko Sato &Dr. Yumiko Kawanishi 

Dr. Will Matsuzaki is Upper School Head and Director of the Tad Bird Honors College at All Saints’ Episcopal School in Fort Worth, Texas. He has also served as the Dean of Curriculum at All Saints’, where he also teaches Upper School Japanese and has coordinated all professional development and coached middle school tennis. Previously, he was Middle School Head at Harford Day School in Maryland, where he also taught Japanese and coached Cross Country. He began his teaching career as middle and upper school Japanese teacher at St. Paul’s School in Maryland, where he was also Department Chair, Dean of Faculty, Tennis and Cross Country Coach, Japanese Exchange Program Director, Director of Diversity, and Technology Coordinator. 

At all three schools, he has led numerous diversity, inclusion and belonging workshops, led parent forums, and made presentations to families. He is a faculty member for the Student Diversity Leadership Conference through the National Association of Independent Schools, where he runs workshops and affinity groups for students across the country. Will also serves as the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Co-Chair for the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. He has led webinars through AATJ and presents at numerous organizations about DEIB.

Will earned his B.A. in Japanese from Carleton College, a MSEd in Technology Education, Graduate Certificate in Administration and Supervision, and an Ed.D. in Teacher Development and Leadership, all from The Johns Hopkins University.

Yoshihiro Mochizuki is a lecturer in Japanese language at the University of Michigan, where he began his teaching career in 2009. With over a decade of experience in teaching Japanese language courses, including Japanese translation and interpreting, he is known for his expertise in the field. He holds degrees in Japanese literature (B.A.: the University of Tokyo; M.A.: the University of Hawaii at Manoa).

His current research focuses on foreign language teaching through the lens of social justice and the role of translation and interpreting in foreign language education. His published works include “On Microaggressions” in Kêsu de kangaeru! Dare mo oshiete kurenai nihongo kyôiku no sekai (forthcoming, 2023) and “Japanese Education and Gender/Sexual Diversity” in Proceedings of the 28th Central Association of Teachers of Japanese Conference (2020).

Prof. Mochizuki currently serves as one of the co-directors of the annual spring conference of the American Association of Teachers of Japanese, where he continues to make significant contributions to the field of Japanese language education in the United States. He is also a certified English-to-Japanese translator and the former administrator of the Japanese Language Division of the American Translators Association (2015-2019).

佐藤明子先生

カリフォルニア州立大学ノースリッジ校の大学院で言語学を学び修士号を修得後、ロサンゼルスの語学学校や土曜日学校で長年日本語教師を務める。その後、カリフォルニア州立大学ロングビーチ校で教員免許を修得し、公立中高校の教師を5年、小学校の日本語イマージョン教師を3年務めた。現在は教員を引退し、日本の速読法「楽読」を世界に広めるべく、日英両語でこのプログラムを発信し伝えている。


 川西由美子先生

Dr. Yumiko Kawanishi earned her Ph.D. degree from the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Currently, she serves as a Japanese lecturer in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at UCLA. Additionally, she has been an adjunct instructor at the Inter-University Center in Yokohama, Japan, for 18 consecutive summers, where she also served as the head instructor of a class for the last 11 summers. 

Her research interests include functional linguistics, discourse analysis, and Japanese language education. She is focused on developing online learning materials related to Japanese onomatopoeia.
